Admission Requirements

The program is open to all applicants around the world. The number of places in the program being limited, admission is highly competitive. The eligibility requirements (validated by all Consortium universities) are the following:

1. Degree

In order to be eligible for the HySET Erasmus Mundus Joint Master, students must hold a Bachelor's Degree (at least 180 credits) in one of the following disciplines (or equivalent):

  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Energy Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering / Chemistry*
  • Electrical Engineering*
  • Aeronautical Engineering*
  • Physics*
  • Industrial Engineering

*NOTE: Students with a degree in Physics, Chemistry, Aeronautical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering will be considered eligible only if they can prove their knowledge in thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics

Such specific requirements may be assessed as not fulfilled if

(1) The average grade is in the lower third on the grading scale used (above pass level);

(2) The degree awarding institution is not considered to meet acceptable quality standards by the authorities of the country in which the institution is located.

(3) The degree does not qualify for admission to equivalent Master level in the country where the degree is awarded.

Prospective students aiming to continue their studies at TU/e have to possess a stronger background in chemistry.

2. English language proficiency

Applicants must hold one of the following English language certificates:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 90 points on the internet-based test and a minimum score of 21 for each section.
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) with a minimum overall band score of 6.5 and a minimum of 6.0 for each section.
  • CAE (Cambridge Assessment English, previously known as Cambridge English Language Assessment) with a minimum score of 160 on the Cambridge English Scale (180 if the 2nd year destination is Tu/e)

Exemption only for graduates who are nationals from English-speaking countries AND who have been taught and evaluated in English. See the list of English-speaking countries here.

Important notes:

  • Any other type of certificate (e.g. Duolingo) or certificates delivered by universities are not accepted.
  • The certificate expiration date is not taken into account.
  • If clarifications are considered necessary, a video conference interview will be arranged.
3. Selection Procedure

STEP 1: The coordinating institution (Politecnico di Torino) is in charge of checking all submitted documents and the fulfilment of the admission requirements.

STEP 2: Applications are reviewed and rated. Four criteria are graded, for a maximum score of 100 points

The criteria are the following:

  1. Academic achievements (GPA - at least 3.0/4.0-, graduation score): Max 30 points.
  2. Relevance of previous studies (university of origin*, check of the basic background on mathematics, physics, chemistry): Max 30 points.
  3. Maximum 2 recommendation letters (by previous universities or companies) and self-presentation (video**): Max 15 points.
  4. Professional and academic experience (CV and other experiences, including other academic competences, professional and/or volunteer experiences, and international experiences) /  awards: Max 25 points

*As far as the university of origin is concerned, the QS World University Ranking by Subject (QS Universities Rankings - Top Global Universities & Colleges | Top Universities) will be consulted. If the university is not ranked, 0 points will be granted.

**only videos with high quality and creative content will be taken into consideration!

STEP 3: On the basis of the reviews, the Admission Board allocates one of the following statuses to each applicant:

  • Admitted in the main list (qualified for an EMJM scholarship application)
  • Registered in the reserve list (qualification for a EU scholarship pending)                                                                                                                                                   For these both statuses (main and reserve lists), if a student is finally disqualified for a EU scholarship, a self-paying status will be proposed (see financial conditions)
  • Admitted with a self-paying status (see financial conditions)
  • Not qualified for a EU scholarshipNot admitted in the HySET program

STEP 4: An online interview will be organized with the potentially admitted students and the students registered in the reserve list to further assess their motivation, their professional and academic resume, their scientific and cultural interests and the basic competencies required to enrol in the  programme. All the applicants must bring to the interview a valid identification document. Failure to attend the interview entails exclusion from the selection process.

STEP 5: Students will be informed by e-mail about their application at the end of January.

Admitted student will have to send a formal confirmation of acceptance of the scholarship by email within 10 days from the acceptance letter.

A student in the waiting list (=not yet admitted) will have two choices:

a) confirm the application as a self-funded student (check fees)

b) wait and hope for an upgrade to the main list.

Gender Balance and Promotion of Female Candidates' Applications

Accordingly with the principles promoted by the European Union and by the HySET consortium’s institutions, from September 2023 the program is committed to:

  • Fostering the gender balance to promote equal access to higher education in science and technology, and to close the gap in women’s participation in the energy transition,
  • Ensuring gender balance in the admission process in order to reach the target of 40% of women on the main list.

All selected candidates in the main and reserve lists need to pass the selection process. Some candidates may be removed from the main list and replaced by the next ranked candidates in the reserve list to comply with the gender ratio target.

4. Documents required to prepare an application

This part is just for information purposes and doesn’t replace what is asked on the application platform.

  1. a CV in pdf created with Europass (https://europa.eu/europass/en/create-europass-cv)
  2. a certified copy of your degree and transcripts (from the Bachelor’s level). If not graduated at the application time (which is perfectly fine), proof of your registration in an education program and the transcripts you already have are sufficient.
  3. two reference letters: they have to be uploaded on the apply portal. The referees can be work managers or professors.
  4. a self-introduction video of 2 to 3 minutes (only videos with high quality and creative content will be taken into consideration!)
  5. a copy of your ID card or passport
  6. a copy of your English test certificate
  7. an ID or CV photo

All documents are submitted electronically. However, the original documents and final certificates will be requested by the academic authorities before enrollment.
